Before the sun set I wanted to get back to the grass shot. This exposure was 1/6400th at f8 and ISO 800.

Now it is 8:15 and the sun is greeting very low. I had to lay in the dirt to get low enough to take these shots. I wanted a very fast shutter speed, I was having a hard time holding the camera still since I was in an awkward position. I also wanted as much depth as I could get so the entire dragon fly would be in focus. I was at 300mm and only 6 feet from the subject so depth of field is shallow. I ended up with the settings of 1/8000th at f8 with ISO of 800. I was happy with the results.

As I was experimenting with the grass shots I noticed a dragon fly that was backlit by the setting sun. He became my subject for now. My first shot of him is _MG_2754.CR2.

Now I wanted to see if more of the grass in focus would look better so in image _MG_2750.CR2 I changed the aperture to f/8. This increased the depth of field, it also lets in much less light so the shutter speed adjusted to 1/200.

Next, image _MG_2748.CR2 I lowed the exposure compensation by one full stop, which lowered the shutter speed from 1/400 to 1/800 cutting the amount of light in half, to richen up the shot. Better still.

I like to try all possibilities so in image _MG_ 2747.CR2 I made the grass the main subject and left the settings the same to give a shallow depth of field to blur the back ground. A little better.

Creation of a photograph

I went out on July 17th, 2010 to see if I could find some good light at sunset. The resulting photographs clearly showed the progression of making a photograph.
This field had been freshly groomed for seed so I hoped to get the light and shadow from one grove to the next in a dramatic fashion.
I started at 8:02pm with this first shot. _MG_2743.CR2.
I used the grass as the foreground, the field as the main subject and the sun as back ground. I wanted a fast shutter speed to minimize camera shake so I chose "aperture priority" at f/3.2 which gave me a shutter speed of 400 at iso 100. My lens was set at 50mm.
As my son would say, "Epic Fail!"

A Green Racer, these guys seem smarter then most snakes I'm familiar with. I was trying to get a shot of a mocking bird and caught a glimpse of the snake watching me from 20 or 30 feet away.

The parents of these little guys made a nest in our role up shade while it was rolled up, I attached a bucket close by to the eves of our house and moved the nest while these guys were still eggs. Luckily the parents found them and carried on with raising their family.
